Road Trip

I just can't help myself. Whenever I am immersed in a book or movie or series, I like to re-live the setting a little in my life. When we were watching "Rome", I seriously at dried figs, apricots, pita, olives and feta doused in olive oil and balsamic--because you know that is what they were always eating in the TV show. Then, we got into "Mad Men" (briefly--got bored quickly) and I wanted little short glasses or whiskey and brandy and packets of sandwiches. After that was "Land Girls" and thick slices of homemade bread with butter and cheese were our lunch for a while. Well, now I'm in a Steinbeck faze and they are always eating beans and tortillas. THEN, I read Cormac Macarthy's All the Pretty Horses and ALL they EVER eat is beans and tortillas. Seriously. So, for our trip up north, I slow cooked a huge pot of pinto beans with ham and onions for flavor. Then I got some homemade tortillas from our local taqueria. We ate like kings on the ride up. I felt so literary stopping by the side of the road in Steinbeck country, with the air blowing around us at 103 degrees and the sky so blue you could reach out and touch the wet paint. Yum.
